Charlie Betty, the owner of Charlie Betty Beauty, shares her story of starting her business as a Facebook group during lockdown 2020. She is responsible for product development, blog writing, social media, marketing, customer support, and packaging. Her husband, a photographer and graphic designer, assists her with product photography and contributes to the development of the items and website. Betty started the company to help women struggling with mental health issues and loneliness during the lockdown. She wanted to create a beauty product that didn’t have to conform to a certain look or act. The goal was to create something “for the underdogs” and embody the community she had formed.
Charlie Betty, the owner of her own cosmetics line, talks about how her business got its start as a Facebook group in lockdown 2020.
What are you doing at the moment?
I am the owner of the cosmetics company Charlie Betty Beauty, which is headquartered in South Yorkshire.
I’m in charge of product development, blog writing, social media, marketing, customer support, and selecting and packaging. My husband is a photographer and graphic designer, so he helps me with product photography and contributes his knowledge to developing the items and website. Thank goodness!
What motivated you to launch your company?
Chuck Betty In lockdown 2020, I started a Facebook group for women who struggled with mental health issues, who were lonely, and who just needed a little normalcy in these terrible times. The group was called Chloe, and its theme was beauty, skincare, and fashion. At the time, I was in the deepest pit of my depression, with nowhere to turn and missing communication. I didn’t want anyone else to suffer the way I did.
At the time, I had been working in the beauty industry for around 12 years, and I had always wanted to define and create my own definition of beauty.
When I worked at beauty salons and other places like them, I experienced a lot of stigma. With the way I looked and the things I was interested in, I felt like I wasn’t ‘average’ enough.
In order to establish that you didn’t have to look a certain way or act a specific way, I bootstrapped my first beauty product. I wanted to develop something “for the underdogs,” something that would embody the community we had formed.
My personal journey of self-discovery, which I gained from the group, as well as spirituality and nature, which greatly aided me in my most trying times, served as the foundation for my first product.
Who do you look up to?
I’ve always surrounded myself with people that push me to grow as a person, like those who started businesses from scratch while maintaining a humble demeanor. I think the greatest motivating quality a person can have is a selfless desire to empower others.
In hindsight, is there anything you wish you had done differently?
I really think that you should learn from your errors. Planning and organization were certainly lacking throughout the first year of the operation. When I first started my business, I didn’t think too far ahead.
What characterizes your corporate culture?
Being open and honest with our community was the foundation of our company, and we will stay that way. We began by focusing on the specifics of everyday life and by being approachable, modest, and authentic.
What words of wisdom would you provide to someone just starting out?
Instead of allowing failures and criticism to demotivate you, use them to your advantage. In business, mistakes are unavoidable; as a result, you should always work to get better and learn from your mistakes.
Take your time, pay attention to your body and mind, and try not to get too tired.
The most important thing, in my opinion, is to stay focused; if you never lose sight of your “why,” everything else will eventually be useful.
At this year’s Business Champion Awards, Charlie Betty Beauty is a finalist for Community Business of the Year.
